Embedded PC is wall-mountable

Sep 28, 2010 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Ibase announced an embedded system featuring a single-core Atom N450 processor, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, and a 160GB, 2.5-inch hard disk drive. The CSB100-891 runs fanlessly, has a wall-mountable enclosure, and has four USB 2.0 ports plus a VGA output, the company says.

According to Ibase, its CSB100-891 is aimed at "multimedia applications" such as POS, kiosk, digital signage, automation, "and other low-noise, fanless embedded applications." As the company acknowledges, the device is built around the IB891 SBC (single board computer) it announced in June.

Using the "3.5-inch" format that actually measures 5.8 x 4.0 inches (147 x 102mm), the IB891 (above) is offered with a choice of Intel Atom "Pineview" processors — the single-core N450 or the dual-core D510. Fanless, heat-sink-only designs are supported when using the N450, says the company, and indeed, only the single-core CPU is offered in the CSB100-891.

Both "Pineview" Atom processors offer integrated memory controllers and graphics cores, the latter clocked at 200MHz for the N450. While hardly a multimedia powerhouse, Intel's graphics engine supports DirectX 9 and OpenGL 1.4, as Ibase notes.

Equipped with up to 2GB of DDR2 memory via a single SODIMM, the IB891 also offers a CompactFlash socket, says Ibase. Dual SATA II interfaces are said to be supplied for more substantial storage, and a Mini PCI Express (PCIe) slot can be used for wireless LAN or TV-tuner modules, says the company.

All the above functionality carries over to the built-up CSB100-891 (above), except that there's presumably no way to use both SATA interfaces. The device does have room internally for a 2.5-inch, 160GB hard disk drive.

Apparently, purchasers can also use the main board's CompactFlash and Mini PCI Express interfaces (oddly, they weren't listed on Ibase's product page or data sheet for the device, but did rate a mention in its PR release.)

The CSB100-891's front panel, pictured earlier, has a microphone input, line output, two USB 2.0 ports, a reset button, and status lights for power and hard disk status. The rear panel, pictured below, has a VGA output, two gigabit Ethernet ports, two more USB 2.0 ports, three serial ports, and a DC power input, according to Ibase.

According to Ibase, the CSB100-891 is powered by a 60 Watt AC adapter. The system may be placed on a desktop, or mounted on a wall using brackets that ship with it, the company says.

Features and specifications listed by Ibase for the CSB100-891 include:

  • Processor — 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450
