Axiomtek announced a 3.5-inch embedded board that can be fitted with Intel's Atom N450, D410, or dual-core D510 processors. The Capa800 offers up to 1GB of DDR2 memory, CompactFlash and PCI Express expansion, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, eight USB ports, and four serial ports, says the company.

Using the "3.5-inch" format, the Capa800 embedded board targets small and fanless devices for in-vehicle infotainment, industrial control, automation, gaming, medical devices, self-serve terminals, and digital signage, says Axiomtek.

While the embedded world has turned its attention to the new Intel Atom E6xx processors over the last two weeks, the Capa800 instead incorporates one of the three 1.66GHz "Pineview" Atoms launched by Intel last December. These include the netbook-oriented Atom N450, as well as the D410 and dual-core D510.

Instead of using the NM10 I/O controller meant for netbooks, Axiomtek instead opts for the larger ICH8M (82801HM) I/O controller. The Pineview processors offer their own built-in Graphics Media Accelerator 3150, which Axiomtek says provides the Capa800 with advanced 3D graphics and 18-bit LVDS and VGA, the latter offered via a standard connector.

A 200-pin SODIMM supports up to 1GB of DDR2 memory, and a CompactFlash slot and two SATA-300 interfaces are provided for storage expansion, says Axiomtek. A PCI Express (PCIe) Mini card interface delivers peripheral expansion, says the company.

The Capa800 offers dual gigabit Ethernet ports, both with Wake-on-LAN, says Axiomtek. Eight USB 2.0 ports are provided, but it appears that only two are extended as real-world ports to the coastline. Four COM ports are provided, including three RS-232 ports and one RS-232/422/485 port, the latter available externally.

A Realtek ALC662 HD audio codec chip supports mic-in, line-in, line-out, and speaker-out interfaces, says Axiomtek. Other I/O includes SMBus and GPIOs. A watchdog timer, hardware monitoring, and a battery are also said to be available.

The board measures 5.75 x 4.1 inches (146 x 104mm), runs only on +12VDC power, and supports 32 to 140 deg. F (0 to 60 deg. C) temperatures. An optional extended-temperature version can run at -4 to 158 deg. F (-20 to 70 deg. C), says the company.

Operating system support includes Linux, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP, says the company.
