Mini ITX board showcases dual-core 1.8GHz Atom

Sep 24, 2010 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 10 views

Portwell announced two Intel Atom-based Mini-ITX boards that support dual display capability. The WADE-8075 uses the 1.8GHz Atom D525 while the WADE-8076 adopts the 1.6GHz Atom N455, and both offer the Intel ICH8M chipset, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, four serial ports, up to 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, and PCI, PCIe, and Mini PCIe expansion, says the company.

The WADE-8075 and WADE-8076 are suitable for lottery and gaming, point-of-sale, medical, digital signage, kiosks, and surveillance security monitoring applications, says Portwell. Similar to other Portwell WADE boards such as the Intel Core 2 Duo-based WADE-8180 and Atom N270-based WADE-8071 and WADE-8170 , the new boards adhere to the 6.7 x 6.7-inch Mini-ITX form-factor.

The WADE-8075 and WADE-8076 move up to two of the new "Oak Trail" Atom processors, the dual-core, 1.8GHz D525 and single-core 1.6GHz N455, respectively. Announced in June, the processors build upon the earlier "Pineview" (N450 and D510) designs, and include a "Lincroft" system-on-chip (SoC) design, also used in the Atom N6xx ("Moorestown").

So far, we have seen the Atom D525 appear in notebooks, panel PCs, and network-attached storage (NAS) devices, but this is the first time we've seen either processor appear on an embedded board.

The 1.8GHz, dual-core D525-based WADE-8075 and 1.6GHz single-core N455 equipped WADE-8076 appear to be otherwise identical except that the latter offers only 18-bit LVDS while the WADE-8075 supports 24-bit LVDS.

Both support simultaneous VGA and LVDS displays, says Portwell. A CRT monitor may be connected via the VGA port to provide up to 2048 x 1536-pixel displays, and LVDS displays are said to be available at up to 1280 x 1024 resolution.

The WADE-8075/76 boards are equipped with an Intel ICM8M controller and accept up to 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM via dual 200-pin SODIMMs. Storage expansion is available via a CompactFlash slot and three SATA connectors, says the company.

Dual gigabit Ethernet ports are available, as are four USB 2.0 ports, while two more USB 2.0 connections are available via headers, says Portwell. Two RS232 ports and an RS232/422/485 port are provided on the coastline, as well as an additional RS232 port available via a pin-header, says the company. In addition, the board provides 16-bit GPIO, a keyboard/mouse header interface, a watchdog timer, and hardware monitoring.

The WADE-8075 and WADE-8076 offer considerable peripheral expansion capabilities, including a PCI slot, a PCI Express (PCIe) slot, and a Mini PCI Express slot. Audio is supported via mic-in, line-in, and line out ports as well as an additional line-out via a header, the company says.

A 12VDC input is built-in, supported by onboard power management, says Portwell. Operating temperatures are listed as 32 to 140 deg. F (0 to 60 deg. C).

Cases for the boards are also said to be available, including the WADE-2221 (one PCI slot and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) and the WADE-2231Q (a PCI slot and a 3.5-inch HDD).

Availability

No pricing or availability information was supplied for the WADE-8075 and WADE-8076, and the only mention of operating system support is that the boards support 64-bit OSes.

More information on the WADE-8075 and WADE-8076, including datasheets, may be found here and here, respectively.
