MontaVista Software's carrier grade Linux will be used as a building block for Alcatel's next-generation telecommunications equipment that have embedded or real-time constraints, according to an announcement made by the two companies today. The companies have signed “a major multi-year corporate contract” for MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE), a Linux-based software platform for… telecommunications applications, the announcement said.

“With the convergence of voice and data, communications companies building on next-generation platforms are being called upon to guarantee the delivery of end-user services in an affordable way,” said Christof Ebert, Alcatel's director Software Coordination. “MontaVista Linux CGE provides a standards-based, open architecture, software development platform that is reliable and scalable and, more importantly, is available today.”

MontaVista said its carrier grade Linux product offers a standard, modular, communications platform for network equipment providers, with high availability features such as CompactPCI hot swap drivers, redundant Ethernet, and RAID1, plus carrier grade enhancements that a hardened driver architecture and fault management services. Additionally, serviceability enhancements are said to include: kernel resource monitoring framework; system event broker and event log with remote access; kernel dumps across LAN, in-memory, disk; multithreaded core dump; boot cycle detection; online debugging and patching; IPMI Driver Support; diskless system support; and serial console support.
