Announcing: the Real Time Linux Foundation

Jan 30, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Linux has become a powerful operating system challenging the OS and computer market, because it is open source and adaptable to different hardware and computing problems. As a general purpose operating system, however, Linux optimizes average performance, and is not that appropriate for real time applications. Nevertheless, there are some groups spread around the world developing modifications to the Linux kernel in order to provide a real time operating system.

The development for the aforementioned Linux adaptations is done in parallel by different groups which introduces fruitful competition and, as long as open source is respected, provides fast development. However, there should be one entry point into the world of real time Linux which offers a common platform for discussion and development. This unique entry point serves as resource with excellent documentation and information on companies providing related real time services.

In order to achieve this aim — as announced at the Real Time Linux Workshop at the Real Time Systems Symposium held in Orlando, November 2000 — a well balanced group has been established between industry, academia, users, and developers now known as the Real Time Linux Foundation, Inc.

The Real Time Linux Foundation, Inc, has been successfully established as an impartial, vendor-neutral, non-profit organization. Please visit our (embryonic) web-site at www.realtimelinuxfoundation.org and read our articles of incorporation. If you think you could benefit from the Foundation, please consider joining as a member or sponsor.

In due course, the www.realtimelinux.org domain name will become part of the Real Time Linux Foundation maintaining the present discussion lists and archives. We are discussing this with Lineo ISG right now.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Foundation and the development of real time Linux kernels and applications.
