May 28, 2001 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

The Linux conference/expo formerly known as the “Atlanta Linux Showcase” has moved out of Atlanta and changed its name to the “Annual Linux Showcase” (ALS). This year's ALS will take place November 5-10, in Oakland, California. Below is an excerpt from the ALS 2001 announcement and call for papers. Interestingly, the topic of Embedded Linux Application Development and Deployment is first on the list of proposed sessions . . .

Each year, the best and the brightest in the Linux world come together at one technical conference, the Annual Linux Showcase & Conference. Now in its fifth year, ALS continues its remarkable development as the premier technical Linux conference, attracting expert talks on everything from kernel internals to Internet services, panels discussing the state of the Kernel, invited talks presenting Linux in the real world, and more. If you are a professional working with Linux or an enthusiast looking for the new technology, ALS needs to be the top event on your calendar.

The 5th Annual Linux Showcase & Conference breaks with tradition by moving out of Atlanta. The growth of Linux and of this conference is only highlighted in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the pulse of technology beats loud and clear. The combination of technical tracks, invited talks, expert panels, Birds-of-a-Feather sessions, tutorials, workshops, and the infamous hallway track provide plenty of opportunity to learn from Linux experts, professionals with real world experience, and industry leaders. This conference also sponsors a large three day vendor exhibition showcasing over 90 top Linux companies and their products and services.

Technical Sessions — November 8-10, 2001

Three days of technical sessions feature refereed papers and invited talks by industry luminaries. Refereed papers are from the community, submitted by authors anxious to share their technical advances, and can win valuable cash and prizes! Papers are published in the Proceedings provided to conference attendees in print and on CD-ROM. Refereed papers present problems and solutions in all areas from kernel internals to real world practical experience.

ALS seeks refereed papers on topics relating to Linux and the Open Source world. Topics of interest include:

  • Embedded Linux Application Development and Deployment
  • Linux Kernel Enhancements
  • Linux Clustering and High Availability
  • Internet and Networking Services
  • Desktop Interfaces Design: GNOME and KDE
  • Security, Security, Security
  • Linux Performance Tuning
  • World Domination
Selection will be based on the quality of the written submission and whether the work advances the state of the art on Linux technologies. Please see the detailed author guidelines on the website, including sample extended abstracts and final papers.
