Lanner announced a low-end network appliance powered by the dual-core Intel Atom D510 or single-core D410 processor. The FW-7539 is equipped with four gigabit Ethernet ports with optional LAN bypass, dual USB 2.0 ports, and Mini-PCIe expansion, says the company.

The FW-7539 is based on the FW-7535 announced in June, but it provides a stripped-down feature set, with four gigabit Ethernet ports instead of six, a cooling fan instead of passive heatsink, and presumably, a lower price. (Earlier this year, Lanner shipped a somewhat similar, eight-port Lanner FW-7565 network appliance based on the Intel Atom D510, in this case cooled by two fans.)

Like the FW-7535, the FW-7539 runs on a dual-core Intel Atom D510 or single-core D410 "Pineview" processor, each clocked to 1.66GHz. Support is said to be provided for Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, which can offer faster response times in multitasking environments.

Like the FW-7535, the FW-7539 can be equipped with up to 4GB of DDR2 667MHz memory, and offers a Compact Flash slot and a Mini PCI Express (PCIe) slot. In this case, however, the 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive bay is optional.

The FW-7539's four gigabit Ethernet ports include one driven by an Intel 82574L controller and three using Intel 82583V controllers, says Lanner. A LAN bypass pair is said to be optional, and LEDs are said to be available for each port.

Additional I/O is said to include dual USB 2.0 ports and an RJ-45 console port. With the added fan, the dimensions have grown to 8.46 x 7.4 x 1.69 inches (215 x 188 x 43mm). Like its big brother, however, the unit supports operating temperatures of 32 to 104 deg. F (0 to 40 deg. C), says the company.

Stated Terence Chou, Network Appliances Product Planner at Lanner, "With today's emphasis on cloud computing and enterprise networks, many companies do not spend enough resources designing smaller appliances. The FW-7539 is the latest of Lanner's small form factor network appliance offerings."
