IDC: Worldwide handheld device shipments decline 12% from previous year

The worldwide market for handheld devices declined in the first quarter of 2004 due to seasonally sluggish demand and vendor refocusing, according to market analyst IDC's “Worldwide Handheld QView.” Device shipments decreased 11.7 percent year-on-year in 1Q04, and dropped sequentially 33.1 percent to 2.2 million units. Metrowerks tool supports entire embedded Linux dev cycle

Metrowerks has announced a version of its embedded Linux development suite meant to support the entire device development cycle in a single integrated development environment (IDE). Wind River adds support for PowerQUICC II Linux app debugging

Wind River has added support for Linux application development to its VisionClick debugger for PowerQUICC II embedded processors. VisionClick can now debug applications written for Linux, regardless of kernel version or distributor, or for Wind River's VxWorks RTOS. New MontaVista investors raise total funding to $70M+

Four companies have invested a combined $7M in the latest round of financing for embedded Linux company MontaVista Software. Siemens Venture Capital, Samsung Ventures America, Infineon Ventures, and China Development Industrial Bank represent new investors for the privately held company, which has raised over $72M since forming in 1999. According to a recent report by Venture Development Corp. (VDC) titled The Merchant Computer Boards for Embedded/Real Time Applications Market Intelligence Program 2002/2003, the global market for embedded merchant computer boards reached $3.3 billion in 2003 and is expected to reach $4.3 billion by the year 2006, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 6.4%.
