New kernel aims to bring Linux-like OS to 8-bit MCUs

A tiny new “Linux-like” operating system has been released under the GPL, according to a post in the LinuxDevices.com reader forum. LinLike8 aims to bring a Linux-like kernel to 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs). Version 00.01.00 supports a Cypress Microsystems programmable system-on-chip (PSoC), according to its author, and can be downloaded now. (more…)

Lead-free motherboard targets embedded, industrial use

Industrial automation specialist Yamashita is shipping a completely lead-free motherboard that it says complies with new green-computing directives from the European Union. The company built the micro-ATX AS-1210 board using lead-free chips and manufacturing processes supplied and developed by VIA. (more…)

Motorola licenses multi-format browser for smartphones

Picsel Technologies has announced that its Picsel Browser was licensed for use in forthcoming and currently shipping Motorola smartphones, including those based on embedded Linux. AMD joins OSDL

Microprocessor vendor AMD has joined the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), and will serve on the Carrier Grade and Data Center Linux working groups. AMD pioneered 64-bit x86 computing, and supplies a number of small processors popular in embedded Linux devices. (more…)

USB framework for Linux adds ‘Bulverde’ driver

Belcarra Technologies has added drivers for Intel's latest XScale chip to its Linux USB Framework 2.0, software for device designers that supports eight target platforms. The new Belcarra driver supports Intel's PXA 27x, or 'Bulverde' processor, a power-conserving chip based on ARM technology and targeting multimedia-enabled mobile devices. (more…)

Altera FPGA with soft-core Nios Linux on PC/104
