GPL’ed “SSL Lite” for embedded Linux enters beta testing

PeerSec Networks has released a beta version of MatrixSSL, its small SSL library optimized for embedded systems and released under the GPL. Copyright risk assessment and indemnification insurance firm hires prominent Linux legal expert

Open Source Risk Management (OSRM) has hired Groklaw editor Pamela Jones as Director of Litigation Risk Research. OSRM provides copyright infringement risk analysis through text pattern matching technology, and markets vendor-neutral indemnification insurance to companies — such as embedded Linux device makers — using open source technology. OSDL document defines data center needs

The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) has released Data Center Linux (DCL) Technical Capabilities, version 1.0, a document that defines and prioritizes Linux capabilities required by demanding enterprise-class applications. The public reference blueprint will form the basis of a DCL requirements document, pending input from Linux distributions, large end users, and Linux kernel developers. (more…)

Project aims to port Linux to closed Taiwanese smartphones

A project to port Linux to several smartphones manufactured by HTC of Taiwan and sold under various brand names was announced January 30 on the XDA-Developers project Website. The new “Xanadux” project aims to support GPRS and phone functions alongside Linux on the devices, and is seeking help from interested developers. (more…)

GPL-licensed GUI IDE achieves major release

“LDK” public beta supports kernel 2.6 on IA32, PPC8260

TimeSys claims to have made the first commercial release of Linux 2.6 for PowerPC, releasing a beta version of its “Linux Development Kit” (LDK) for the Motorola PPC8260. A 2.6-based LDK beta is also available for IA32 processors, with more architectures to follow. (more…)

Eclipse-based embedded dev tools support any 2.4 or 2.6 kernel

TimeSys has updated its Eclipse-based TimeStorm Linux Tool Suite, adding support for any 2.6 Linux kernel and lowering the price of the TimeStorm IDE to $795 per seat. The company claims that TimeStorm is the first development tool based on Eclipse to support 2.6-series kernels. (more…)

IDC: smartphone market nearly doubled in 2003

DeviceForge.com has published key findings from IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone QView research service. According to the findings, handset sales for the year 2003 exceeded half a billion units for the first time in the market's history. “Converged mobile devices” (smartphones) in particular showed “significant growth and future promise” in 2003, according to IDC, growing over 180% year-over-year.
