The Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS) is a small, low-budget amateur aerospace group. PSAS is currently developing medium-sized sub-orbital rockets with the eventual goal of inserting nanosatellites (satellites that weigh less than 10 kg) into orbit. According to a mobile handset market forecast just published by the Probe Group, the mobile handset embedded operating system market will be led by Symbian, followed by Microsoft. The original Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 stored PIM (personal information management) data in an XML format. Developers found this great, because they could get at the data from within their own applications by simply parsing the XML. Now, the new Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 (and ROM 3.10 update for the SL-5500) have replaced the XML format with “DTM” — the DaTa Manager engine. (more…)

OSDL and SD Times released the results of a joint survey on the use of Linux in corporations this week. The survey of 8,000 SD Times readers, mostly senior managers at corporations with more than 1,000 employees, showed broad and deep use of Linux in IT shops even though only a third of the companies had adopted the open source operating system as a corporate standard computing platform. Lineo uSolutions Inc. and Open Interface North America Inc. have announced a collaboration based on teaming up Open Interface's “BLUEmagic 3.0” embedded Bluetooth protocol stack with Lineo's “uLinux” embedded Linux distribution. NEC handed out datasheets for a new (but as yet unannounced) chip in its “VR Series” system-on-chip (SOC) processor product line, at this week's Embedded Processor Forum in San Jose, CA. The VR4133 is based on a 64-bit MIPS architecture RISC CPU core that runs at a 266 MHz clock rate and delivers a performance level of 433 million instructions per second, NEC said. (more…)
