This thoughtful essay by Dr. Ari Jaaksi, Nokia's director of open source, explores Nokia's experience developing a commercial software environment based two-thirds on open-source software. Jaaksi lists a few challenges, but concludes that tapping into open-source components and the developer community saves both time and resources.

Specifically, Jaaksi recounts Nokia's experience building the 770 Internet tablet. Much of the 770's software is openly developed at the maemo.org site founded by Nokia prior to launching the tablet.

Jaaksi's insights and observations may be especially pertinent for other companies deliberating over the choice between open-source and commercial embedded operating systems.
