EBX boards pack dual-core Atoms

WinSystems announced a pair of EBX-format SBCs (single board computers) featuring dual-core Atom processors plus PC/104, PCI/104-Plus, and Mini PCI expansion connectors. The EBC-C384-D has a 1.8GHz D525 processor and up to 4GB of RAM, while the fanless EBC-C384-S has a 1.66GHz N455 and up to 2GB of RAM, according to the company.

WinSystems used the Embedded Systems Conference, now under way in Boston, to announce its two new EBX SBCs. We haven't seen many products using this 8 x 5.75-inch format in recent years, but its advantages include the fact that it provides both PC/104-Plus (PCI) and PC/104 (ISA) expansion connectors.

WinSystems' EBC-C384D

According to WinSystems, its new EBC-C384-D (above) and EBC-C384-S each additionally offer a Mini PCI expansion slot and a CompactFlash slot. Hard disk drives are supported as well, via two onboard SATA ports, the company adds.

The difference between the EBC-C384-D and EBC-C384-S is that the former is expandable to 4GB of onboard DDR3 memory and includes a 1.8GHz Atom D525 processor (10-Watt TDP). The EBC-C384-S is expandable only to 2GB of DDR3 memory and includes a 1.66GHz Atom N455 processor (5.5-Watt TDP).

The otherwise-identical SBCs each have two gigabit Ethernet ports with RJ45 connectors. All other I/O is supplied via headers, Win Systems offering an optional cable kit to get their signals to the outside world.

For example, header signals include eight USB 2.0 ports, four serial ports (all RS232/422/485), a parallel port, PS/2 (for keyboard and mouse), and 48 GPIO lines. According to Win Systems, the SBCs also offer VGA (resolution up to 1400 x 1050 pixels) and LVDS (up to 1280 x 800 or 1366 x 768) video as well as 7:1 audio output.

WinSystems says the EBC-C384-D and EBC-C384-S are operable via optional 1650mAh or 2700mAh batteries. Equipped with watchdog timers, the RoHS-compliant devices are compatible with Linux, Windows Embedded 7, Windows XP Embedded, DOS, and most other x86 operating systems, the company adds.
