Mini-ITX boards offer multiple Ethernet, serial ports

Jul 7, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 36 views

IEI announced a pair of Mini-ITX boards featuring Intel's Atom D425 or D525 processors, both clocked at 1.8GHz. The KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 support up to 4GB 800MHz DDR3 memory, have triple gigabit Ethernet ports, and have expansion slots including Mini PCI Express, PCI Express x1, and PCI, according to the company.

Like the related KINO-PVN-D4251/D5251 and KINO-PV-D4252/D5252 that we covered in March, the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 (pictured) are Mini-ITX boards equipped with Intel Atom processors: either the single-core D425 or the dual-core D525. However, the newer devices have been pumped up with multiple serial ports and network interfaces.

Specifically, the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 each feature triple gigabit Ethernet ports. Also on their coastlines (below) are quadruple RS232 ports with RJ45 connectors, another RS232 port with a DB9 connector, six USB 2.0 ports, and a VGA output that is said to support resolutions up to 2048 x 1536 pixels.

According to IEI, the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 use Intel's ICH8M I/O controller, have two SODIMM slots that accept up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, and sport dual SATA connectors for disk storage.

IEI says both boards have dual Mini PCI Express slots, one intended for an available disk-on-module and the other ready to accept a wireless LAN adapter. Also on board, and visible below, are a PCI slot and a PCI Express x1 slot.

Headers on the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 provide access to an internal RS232/422/485 port, two additional USB 2.0 ports, a PS/2 port, and a parallel port. There are also connectors for a trusted platform module and for 8-bit digital I/O (4-bit in, 4-bit out), according to IEI.

Unlike the earlier KINO boards mentioned above, the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 are designed to be operated by an ATX power supply instead of a 12VDC input. They work fanlessly in temperatures from -4 to 130 deg. F, or in temperatures from -4 to 150 deg. F with the aid of a fan, IEI says.

Specifications listed for the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 by IEI include:

Further information

IEI did not cite pricing or operating system support, but the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 appear to be on sale now and should run all typical x86 OSes. More information may be found on the KINO-PV-D4253 and KINO-PV-D5253 product page.
