3.5-inch SBC steps up to Sandy Bridge power
Oct 13, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 13 viewsIbase announced a 3.5-inch single board computer (SBC) that supports Intel “Sandy Bridge” Core processors clocked up to 2.6GHz. The IB905 has two gigabit Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, plus support for both DVI-I and LVDS displays, the company says.
Like many other SBCs from Ibase, the IB905 uses the "3.5-inch" format that actually measures 5.8 x 4.0 inches. However, it's the company's highest-powered such offering, most others relying on AMD Geode or Intel Atom processors (the IB891, for example).

According to Ibase, the IB905 uses Intel's QM67 Express chipset, while a rPGA988B socket on the back of the board accepts "Sandy Bridge" processors (including Core i7/i5/i3 and Celeron versions) clocked at up to 2.6GHz. A single DIMM slot accepts up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, the company adds.
The IB905 also includes a Mini PCI Expansion slot, no doubt intended primarily to accept a wireless networking card, and two 6Gbit/sec. SATA ports. Coastline connectors, seen at the top of the image below, consist of a DVI-I port, two gigabit Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and two USB 2.0 ports.

The rest of the IB905's interfaces are provided by headers. Namely, there are: an LVDS connector; four additional USB 2.0 ports; two serial ports (1 x RS232 and 1 x RS232/422/485); and a 5:1 audio output, according to Ibase.
Ibase did not detail whether the IB905 can run fanlessly, though we suspect that most of the processor choices would require a little help with heat dissipation. The company does cite an optional processor heat sink, and says the SBC can operate in temperatures ranging from 32 to 140 deg. F.
Specifications listed by Ibase for the IB905 include:
