Embedded Linux specialist TimeSys is among the sponsors of a Pittsburgh conference exploring the strategies and economics of open source software. The “Open Source Summit” will feature discussions of corporate open source initiatives, adoption, licensing, and business models, and will be held the evening of Thurs., Feb. 15.

The Summit's title sponsor is TiE (The IndUS Entrepreneurs, also known as “Talent, Ideas, and Enterprise”), a self-described global non-profit network of professionals focused on mentoring, networking, and education. Other event sponsors include IBM, Information Week, and Thoughtform Design.

The Summit's keynote will be delivered by Ray Lane, former Oracle COO, now a general partner at venture capitalist firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). The event also features an expert discussion on topics such as development models, support, licensing, and competition with Microsoft. Panel participants include:

TimeSys CEO Joseph Raffa stated, “Companies that know how to leverage open source development properly will be at a huge strategic advantage in their market.”

TimeSys markets a LinuxLink service aimed at helping customers aggregate open source components into custom embedded Linux distributions. It says it contributes frequently to the open source community, sponsoring projects such as real-time enhancements in the Linux kernel, the tsrpm cross development tool, and the Eclipse project's CDT (C/C++ development tool).
