Ericsson kills Linux-based Cordless Web Screen project

Nov 2, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Subsequent to a reader comment that an article published in Sweden reports that Ericsson has discontinued their Linux-based Cordless Web Screen project, LinuxDevices.com contacted Ericsson to check on the… status of the project.

Maja Sever, of Ericsson Home Communications, replied: “Ericsson has decided not to commercially launch the Cordless Web Screen H610. This decision is based on Ericsson's belief that the market is not mature enough for such devices. Whether similar initiatives will be taken in the future is impossible to speculate, but we still believe in a growing market for home communication devices. As you probably understand, we cannot comment on ongoing product developments.”

The H610 Cordless Web Screen (originally called the HS210 Cordless Screen Phone) was basically intended to be a wireless webpad with a built-in telephone and Bluetooth wireless technology for in-home use. It was designed to surf the web, check email, send voice clips, and make phone calls. Its embedded computer was based on an Intel StrongARM processor running a Red Hat supplied Linux operating system. The GUI framework was derived from Trolltech's Qt/Embedded GUI toolkit, and the browser was from Opera.

A LinuxDevices.com “device profile” on the discontinued Ericsson H610 Cordless Web Screen is located here.
