Advantech announced a fanless automation computer that offers an optional PC/104+ expansion slot. The UNO-1170A/AE is equipped with an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM and 512KB of battery-backed static RAM, CompactFlash and hard disk storage, and external and internal USB ports, the company says.

Featuring an aluminum chassis designed for DIN-rail or wall mounting, Advantech's UNO-1170A/AE is a re-do of a UNO-1170 model that first appeared in February 2009 with a 1.0GHz Celeron M CPU or a 1.4GHz Pentium M. The "A" iteration gets an 1.6GHz Intel N270 processor  — certainly with the 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge, though these weren't credited — and 1GB of "built-in" DDR2 memory, apparently non-expandable.

Advantech's UNO-1170A

Like the original, the UNO-1170A/AE devices again include 512KB of battery-backed static RAM, for maintaining data in case of power failure, plus the ability to operate fanlessly in temperatures ranging from 14 to 140 deg. F. They're an "ideal choice" for "machine builder" applications, Advantech says, citing EDMs (electrical discharge machines) or industrial textile machines.

Once more, too, the device comes in two configurations: the standard model pictured earlier, plus an "E" version that adds an inch to the device's width, and, in return, delivers Mini PCI and PC/104+ expansion slots. The case provides room for the latter to host one or two stackable expansion modules, according to Advantech.

Both devices include a CompactFlash slot and 2.5-inch drive bay, and both share the same front panel, pictured above. At the top, there are clearly labeled status lights, monitoring functions such as LAN and serial port activity, plus 3.5mm jacks for line-level audio I/O. Below that, there are three USB ports, two 10/100 Ethernet ports, three serial ports, and a VGA output.

Advantech says the UNO-1170A and UNO-1170AE also have a fourth USB port internally. Also cited on the data sheet, though not visible in the photographs, is a PS/2 port, for keyboard/mouse connection.

Specifications listed by Advantech for the UNO-1170A and UNO-1170AE include:
