Hard Hat Linux hits the battlefield

Mar 12, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

MontaVista Software's Hard Hat Linux is being used by ITT Industries to enhance the capabilities and effectiveness of a handheld radio communications system for soldiers. ITT is the lead contractor on a DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) project to build a “soldiers radio.” The beta version of the radio unit, which is based on multiple StrongARM processors, is expected to be completed… later this year. This radio is designed to function in unfriendly environments such as jungles and cities where wireless communications frequently have reliability problems. The technology being developed by the ITT team will be able to adapt to differing environments to ensure constant connectivity.
