Oct 7, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsThe Hindu Business line (Bangalore, India) reports that InfoMart is scheduled to release Kaii, a Linux- and Java-based PDA running on a 160MHz Hitachi 215 MIPS… processor, later this month.
Targeting the vertical and enterprise markets, Infomart is planning what they call 'mass customization.' The Kaii PDA can come in color (16-bit) or monochrome, with a 3.5- or 3.8-inch 240 x 320 pixel display. Available memory configurations will include 64MB SDRAM with 32MB Flash, or 32MB SDRAM with 16MB Flash. Expansion can include both Secure Digital (SD) and CompactFlash (CF) Type-II expansion slots. The Kaii also has the unique capability to act as both a USB device as well as a USB host, meaning you can connect a mouse, keyboard, etc.
Similar to the popular Sharp Zaurus PDA, the Kaii will run Lineo's Embedix Plus Linux Kernel v.2.4.2, TrollTech's QT/Embedded and Qtopia environment, Opera's embedded web browser, Insignia's Jeode Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and Hancom's Mobile Office Suite.
Infomart envisions Kaii being utilized for other uses beyond that of a simple PDA, such as wall-mounted displays at airports and bus terminals.
The Kaii will be priced at 'under Rs 10,000' for the monochrome version, and around Rs 15,000 for the color (about USD $300).
