Synology America is shipping two network-attached storage (NAS) devices running its Linux-based Synology DiskStation Manager 2.3 software. The desktop DiskStation DS411+ and rack-mount RackStation RS810+ are both equipped with dual-core Intel Atom D510 processors, as well as four bays supporting up to 8TB each, with the RS810+ expandable to 16TB via Synology's RX410 add-on unit.

Both NAS devices are aimed at small to medium business (SMBs), although with its rackmount configuration and greater expandability, the RS810+ targets SMBs with greater storage needs, including virtualization support, says Synology. An RS810RP+ variant, meanwhile, is said to offer a redundant power supply.

As with other Synology NAS devices, the devices support interoperability with Linux, Windows, and Mac workstations. These platforms run the desktop counterparts of the embedded Linux DiskStation Manager 2.3 (DSM 2.3) software (see farther below).

Synology DS411+

Both the DiskStation DS411+ and RackStation RS810+ are equipped with the dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor, clocked at 1.67GHz. Both models come standard with 1GB of memory, and the RS810+ is expandable to 3GB, says the company.

Tested in a RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, the Synology RS810+ and DS411+ each deliver an average of 112MB/sec reading speed, claims Synology. The RS810+ writes at 107MB/sec, and the DS411+ writes at 106MB/sec, says the company. Web server responsiveness rates are touted for both units as taking less than 32 seconds to handle 1,000 simultaneous requests.

Each unit provides four bays that can accommodate four 3.5-inch SATA II hard disk drives (HDDs) or 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drives (SSDs), offering the potential for 8TB of onboard storage, says Synology. In addition, the RS810+ is said to support hot-swappable drives, and can be extended with Synology's RX410 expansion unit, which doubles storage capacity to 16TB. Synology's two-bay, Atom D410-based DiskStation DS710+ supports a similar expansion enclosure option.

DS411+ detail

On either the DS411+ or RS810+, external storage units may be attached via an eSATA port, as well as dual USB 2.0 ports, says Synology. While the RS810+ offers dual gigabit Ethernet ports, the DS411+ offers only one, says the company.

The DS411+ weighs 4.9 pounds (2.23 kg), and measures 7.24 x 6.61 x 9.06 inches (184 x 168 x 230mm), says Synology. Consuming 60.5 Watts in typical operation using a 100V to 240V power supply, the DS411+ deploys dual 80mm fans to help it withstand temperatures of 40 to 95 deg. F (5 to 35 deg. C), claims the company.

RS810+

The rackmount RS810+ weighs 15.6 pounds (7.1 kg), and the RS810RP+ version weighs 21.3 pounds (9.68 kg), says Synology. The RS810+ is said to measure 18.0 x 16.9 x 1.73 inches (457.5 x 430.5 x 44mm). The RS810RP+, meanwhile, goes deep with 22.5 x 16.9 x 1.73-inch dimensions (570.5 x 430.5 x 44mm) in order to hold the redundant power supply.

Cooled by three 40mm fans, the rackmount models support the same 100V to 240V power input as the DS411+. The RS810/RS810RP+ supports temperatures of 40 to 95 deg. F (5 to 35 deg. C), and consumes 68 Watts in typical use and 28 Watts with HDD hibernation, claims the company.

RX410 expansion unit

The Synology RS810+/RS810RP+ is certified as "VMware ready," says Synology, "delivering a reliable storage solution for virtualization deployment." In addition to the hot-swappable drive capability, the modular design allows for rapid  replacement of the motherboard if necessary, says the company. Both the RS810+/RS810RP+ and the DS411+ are said to offer power saving features including wake on LAN/WAN, scheduled power on/off, and hard drive hibernation.

DSM 2.3

The DS411+ and RS810+/RS810RP+ ship with version 2.3 of Synology's Linux-based Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) software, which is compatible with Linux, Windows, and Mac workstations. New features include encryption, backup to Amazon's S3 cloud storage service, and a Synology Hybrid RAID feature touted for quick, easy setup of RAID volumes.

With DSM 2.3, the Synology devices can host up to 30 websites using the Web Station server, as well as act as mail servers with Mail Station, says Synology. The devices also support up to 20 IP cameras with DSM's Surveillance Station, and offer iSCSI capability and Windows ADS integration, says the company. The Synology DS411+, RS810+, RS810RP+, and RX410 and are now shipping worldwide, says the company, which did not list pricing.
