MontaVista has bought out its partners to take full ownership of a Seoul-based embedded Linux venture. MontaVista Software Korea will continue to help MontaVista support Samsung, LG Electronics, ETRI, and other Korean customers using MontaVista's embedded Linux distribution and development tools,… MontaVista said.

MontaVista did not disclose its previous partners in the joint venture, established in 2003. Now a wholly owned subsidiary, MontaVista Software Korea will provide sales, support, and consulting engineering services to electronic device designers using the DevRocket development tools and MontaVista Linux OS stacks. The new unit will be headed up by a new Korea Country Manager, Young-Hoon Yoo, formerly of WebMethods, EMC Documentum, and Cadence Design Systems.

Stated Tom Kelly, president and CEO of MontaVista, “We expect to sign more than 50 agreements with 30 different Korean companies this year alone. We are making this investment to build closer relationships with our Korean customers, and with the markets they help drive.”

In September, MontaVista released version 5.0 of its Mobilinux OS, claiming that the software powers “90 percent of Linux smart phones.”
