A Motorola smartphone scheduled for US distribution before the year-end holiday season will include embedded Linux software from MontaVista and embedded database software from Sleepycat, the companies announced today.

Motorola's A780 will target business users, offering PDA capabilities through a 240 x 320 color touchscreen, full-motion video recording, and support for various productivity and other document formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, MP3, and JPG files.

Sleepycat says the A780 will store enterprise data using Berkeley DB, described as an “enterprise-class data manager with full transactional support.” Email, calendar, and contact information stored in Berkeley DB will support OTA (over-the-air) synchronization using “Motosync,” a secure synchronization solution from Motorola expected to debut with the A780 during Q4 of 2004 (read more about Motosync and other A780 features here).

“We're pleased to supply our software for the management of device applications including Java games, audio files, and video clips,” said Sleepycat VP of marketing Rex Wang.

MontaVista says the A780 will use MontaVista Linux, the same OS used by previous Linux-based smartphones from Motorola marketed in Asia, including the A760 , A768 and E680. MontaVista says its Linux OS provides a stable, versatile mobile platform supporting both native and Java technology-based applications.

“The mobile device industry is rapidly adopting Linux to deliver innovative and cost-effective products,” said MontaVista product marketing manager Jacob Lehrbaum.
