TEMPE, Ariz., — Motorola Computer Group (MCG), the world's leading supplier of embedded computing platforms for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), today introduced the emS Series the first in MCG's new line of Intel x86 embedded server platforms integrating the Linux open operating system. An ATX form factor embedded system, the emS-ATXI can be used to power a variety of telecommunications, Internet, imaging and industrial automation server applications, including e-mail, file systems, application development tools and workstation connectivity. This highly scalable and customizable platform-with an industrial 19″ rackmount chassis-enables OEMs to deliver cost-effective systems designed to meet end-user specifications.

This introduction is part of MCG's unified Linux strategy–also announced today–which provides MCG's OEM and telecom customers with a broad selection of Linux-based platforms, open source software, service and support, training, and integration services. As part of this initiative, MCG is collaborating with Lineo, Inc., an embedded Linux software company, and Caldera Systems, which offers Linux software solutions for business applications.

Businesses around the world are becoming increasingly dependent on networking technologies, as electronic commerce plays a greater role in the global economy. The systems they require must be flexible, affordable and expandable to meet their growing business needs. To help its telecommunications, Internet and industrial automation customers to meet this demand, MCG has integrated the Linux O/S into its embedded platforms for server applications. With a 17 percent share of the server market today, the Linux open operating system is increasingly being adopted as the platform of choice for many users, according to analyst firm IDC.

“This new platform combines MCG's expertise in high performing, embedded computing solutions with the proven OpenLinux operating systems from Caldera Systems–an ideal combination for OEMs building telecommunications, Internet and industrial automation applications,” said Wayne Sennett, corporate vice president and general manager, MCG. “With either a 450 or 500 MHz Pentium III processor included, the emS-ATXI is one of the fastest systems available today and can provide OEMs with a head start on packaging their solutions-thus reducing total product cost and improving time to market.”

The emS-ATXI comes in a 19-inch industrial-strength chassis with a 400-watt power supply, providing a powerful and expandable system platform to meet the demanding needs of OEM customers. It incorporates an ATX motherboard with 10/100 Mbit Ethernet, on-board USB, EIDE, IDE, Flash, audio, serial, parallel ports, IrDA port; three PCI expansion slots, one shared PCI/ISA slot, one ISA slot, an ultrawide SCSI port. Additional features include a 128MB Dual Inline Memory Module, a 9GB SCSI hard drive, 32x SCSI CD-ROM drive, AGP 4MB graphics card and a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive. The emS Series of systems will be expanded to include platforms that incorporate MCG's x86 and PowerPC Compact PCI products, Passive PCI products, PowerPC motherboard products, and PowerPC VME products.
