King of Prussia, PA — (press release excerpt) — Neoware Systems today announced Release 2.1 of its NeoLinux operating system with enhancements that improve the user experience through increased functionality. NeoLinux 2.1 adds integrated USB support, an RDP client for Windows 2000 servers, an upgraded Citrix ICA client, and multi-lingual keyboard support for European languages. NeoLinux is a compact version of Red Hat Linux designed to operate without a hard drive or significant amounts of memory. NeoLinux, initially released in June of 2000, targets business focused computing appliances.

NeoLinux Release 2.1 adds integrated USB support to allow users to connect USB CD-ROM, floppy, SuperDISK, and Zip drives to their Neoware Eon appliances. This newly integrated capability allows Eon users to store files on local media and move these files to PCs or other desktop devices — a capability not available with most thin client appliances on the market. Included with NeoLinux 2.1 is a new RDP client which allows users to connect directly to Windows 2000 servers and run Windows-based
applications from a server via Microsoft's native RDP protocol. Additionally, Neoware has included Citrix's ICA6 client to provide users of Citrix MetaFrame with use the latest Citrix features, including high-color and high-resolution video, and faster performance over low bandwidth connections. Previously, these capabilities required Eon users to separately install software on each Eon appliance.

NeoLinux 2.1 also includes newly developed support for multiple keyboard languages, with quick and easy setup, as well as the latest version of the Netscape browser and Pericom terminal emulation clients.

NeoLinux 2.1 includes customizable Neoware-provided features:

  • Neoware ezOff allows Eon appliances to be turned off without a shut-down process
  • Neoware ezSecure provides greater security for operating systems by locking out unauthorized changes
  • Neoware ezSnap for the simple addition of features without updating the entire operating system
  • Neoware ezCompress streamlines the size of the operating system so that it can be installed on computing appliances with as little as 8MB of Flash memory
  • Neoware ezConnect for simple and easy user connection to the Internet and local applications
  • Neoware ezRemote Manager 2.0, a powerful tool that allows remote management, configuration, and updating of computing appliances across a local or wide area networks
Neoware's NeoLinux Release 2.1 is available immediately from Neoware's website.
