Opera 8 beta leaves Linux users speechless
Jan 7, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsYesterday's beta release of Opera 8 for Linux lacks the speech capabilities of the corresponding Windows beta released last month, according to DesktopLinux.com. An article there says Opera's voice support depends on technology from IBM unavailable for Linux, making speech capabilities unlikely to arrive in Opera's Linux browser anytime soon.
The Opera browser is popular in a variety of embedded systems, including kiosks, PDAs, set-top boxes, and smartphones from Motorola, Nokia, and others. The previous Opera release, 7.60, added a feature to eliminate horizontal scrolling, regardless of screen size. The previous 7.50 release added an IRC chat client.
The DesktopLinux article lists new features in the Opera 8 beta that include improved RSS handling, fit to window or paper width, a start-bar for easy access to the most commonly used functions, and automatic update checks.
