OS extension simplifies developing hot swap support

Netanya, ISRAEL — (press release) — Jungo Ltd. has announced GO Hot-Swap, a unique OS extension technology that enables fast and simplified development of hot swap support for systems utilizing CompactPCI compliant hardware. GO Hot-Swap supports Linux and several other OSes.

CompactPCI (CPCI) is a high performance PCI-based backplane bus architecture which offers a hot swap option, whereby CPCI cards can be inserted and removed from the system backplane while the system is running. This feature reduces the system downtime, a critical requirement in applications such as telecom, datacom, and industrial control.

According to Jungo executives, the lack of ready-to-use hot swap capabilities in most of the major operating systems has forced hardware vendors wanting hot swap support to use or develop proprietary operating system software. Jungo says its GO Hot Swap software is intended to address this situation, for it enables immediate implementation of hot swap capabilities

The new Jungo hot swap support consists of three products:

  • Go Hot-Swap Development Toolkit — This product is designed for CPPCI hardware vendors. It enables development of fully “hot swappable” CPCI device drivers from scratch, with advanced graphical tools and Wizards for hardware diagnostics and automatic driver code generation/debugging.
  • GO Hot-Swap Agent — This product is designed for system integrators. It enables system integrators to add Hot-Swap capabilities to existing CPCI devices, without any change to its existing PCI drivers.
  • GO Hot-Swap OS Extender — This product is designed for system board vendors or operating system vendors. The CPCI OS extension enables system board or OS vendors to immediately add Hot-Swap capabilities under any OS.
Availability

A free full-featured evaluation version of the GO Hot-Swap Tools is available for download from the Jungo web site, here. The current Go Hot-Swap version supports Windows 2000, NT, and NT Embedded. Support for Linux, Solaris, and VxWorks will follow shortly.
