LinuxWorld — (press release) — Indrema Corporation, creator of the first Linux-based video game console and digital entertainment platform, and Red Hat, Inc., the leader in Open Source Internet infrastructure, today announced that the companies have formed an alliance to jointly manage branding and distribution of DV Linux, an upcoming universal standard operating system for console video gaming and… TV-based entertainment applications.

The DV Linux distribution will include technology developed by Red Hat and Indrema, and it will provide the necessary components to produce a world class gaming platform for consumer electronics. Indrema will become the first to adopt the DV Linux standard with the release of its Indrema Entertainment System (IES) video game console and software development kit, which incorporates the Open Source DV Linux architecture.

The Red Hat and Indrema partnership will ensure that a universal standard for next-generation video game development emerges to avoid fragmentation in the various Open Source multimedia initiatives. Additionally it will establish necessary development and support mechanisms to assist consumer electronics manufacturers in bringing IES-ready products to market.

“Indrema is creating a new open standard for game development, where the architecture is owned by the developer community,” said John Gildred, founder and CEO of Indrema. “The Red Hat and Indrema partnership demonstrates our combined commitment to accomplishing that goal. The result will be better video games and shorter time to market when developed on an Open Source platform such as the IES.''

The combination of DV Linux and the IES runtime engine and hardware reference design enables unlimited potential for entertainment software applications for consumer electronics. The first such product to market is the Indrema L600 high-performance video game system, the first console to include graphics chip upgradeability via the GPU Slide Bay® technology.

“Red Hat believes that Open Source software is a key technology to enabling a new application platform for home entertainment, and console gaming is the killer application,” said Michael Tiemann, Red Hat Chief Technical Officer. “We are very pleased to be working with Indrema to establish DV Linux as the core component in a new Open Source era in video game development.”
