The Open Group is accepting registrations for a new POSIX certification for operating system real-time predictability. The “PSE54 Multipurpose Realtime 1003.13-2003 System” certification was developed in conjunction with the IEEE, and is based on the criteria for bounded response times in Application Profile PSE54, part of the IEEE's 1003.13-2003 standard.

PSE54 is one of four profiles in the IEEE's 1003.13-2003 standard, “Standardized Application Environment Profile — POSIX Realtime and Embedded Application Support (AEP).” The Open Group says the four profiles in 1003.13-2003 are aligned with the current POSIX standard, IEEE 1003.1-2003, “Standard for Information Technology — Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX),” and that its new PSE54 certification complements its existing certification program for the base POSIX 1003.1 standard.

Andrew Josey, director of certification at the Open Group, said, “The predictable response times enabled by PSE54 are essential for time-critical military, industrial, and other computer system applications. Certification to PSE54 is designed to give users confidence that the realtime products they purchase work within the time constraints they need. Beyond this, we may establish certifications for the other three profiles in IEEE 1003.13, provided sponsors are found to support the testing needed.”
