Iomega has switched its wireless network attached storage (NAS) system from Windows Storage Server 2003 to Linux, and dropped the price from $1,300 to $900. It has also reduced RAM from 256MB to 64MB, and added wireless access point capabilities and automated USB camera downloads, reports ExtremeTech… in an in-depth review of the “StorCenter 1TB.”

The ExtremeTech review finds the StorCenter 1TB to be marginally slower and slightly louder that Buffalo's TeraStation, another comparably priced Linux-based NAS server for home/small office use. And, neither the Iomega nor Buffalo NAS gadgets come close to the throughputs measures for Infrant's slightly pricier Linux-powered ReadyNAS servers. However, the Iomega device's advantages include being able to function as an encrypted wireless access point, along with its USB camera support. Plugging in a supported camera initiates image downloads to a subdirectory named for the date of the download, ExtremeTech says.
