SPECIAL REPORT: Microsoft-funded report claims embedding Linux costs more than embedding Windows

[Updated Sep. 11, 2003] — A report released in July, 2003 by market research firm Embedded Market Forecasters (EMF) claims embedded development projects based on Microsoft's “Windows Embedded” operating system platforms (specifically, Windows CE .NET and Windows XP Embedded) are completed 43% faster and at 68% lower cost, on average, compared with similar projects using Embedded Linux. GPL Linux BSP released for Samsung S3C2410X mobile processor

Mizi Research announced the GPL release of a Linux BSP (board support package) and source code that can be used for developing Linux-based smart handheld devices based on Samsung's S3C2410X mobile processor. Linux PCMCIA framegrabber drivers released under GPL

Linux support for off-the-shelf PCMCIA-based framegrabbers has been sparse to non-existent, so InHand Electronics has created an open source Linux driver and library for the Imperx VCE-B5A01 line of PCMCIA-based framegrabbers to facilitate the development of embedded and handheld devices with real-time video support. Latest unofficial ARM Debian boot disk available

Simtec Electronics announced the availability of a “not-yet-official” Debian GNU/Linux boot disk for ARM processors. The company said it has sponsored the development of the boot disk, and that the changes will be included in the next Debian release (3.0r2); but in the mean time, the boot disk can be downloaded from Simtec's website. Sharp (temporarily?) discontinues Zaurus sales in Europe

There have been several rumors of Sharp discontinuing its Zaurus PDA line in Europe. The company apparently plans to further study the market potential for its Zaurus PDAs in Europe before commiting to future Zaurus marketing efforts there. New embedded communications processor supports Linux

Integrated Device Technology (IDT) announced a new member of its Interprise “integrated communications processor” family. The new RC32336 processor — which is based on a 180MHz 32-bit MIPS architecture CPU core and includes an SDRAM memory controller, dual Ethernet MACs, serial and digital I/O, and a PCMCIA interface — is aimed at wireless gateway and wireless access point applications, IDT said. Wyse notes 80% growth of Linux thin-client market, unveils new devices

Wyse Technology announced a pair of Linux-based thin-client terminals today, which the company said will “address the rapidly expanding Linux thin-client market . . . and allow [it] to maintain its dominance of the worldwide thin-client market.” Data from market research firm IDC indicates that the worldwide Linux thin-client market grew more than 80% in 2002, Wyse said.
