Open Source Risk Management (OSRM) and Open Bar will host a seminar about open source license liability exposure and mitigation on May 3, in Santa Clara, Calif. Entitled “Preserving open source benefits while managing open source risks,” the $495 seminar targets IP (intellectual property) lawyers, CIOs, CTOs, and technology directors.

According to OSRM, the seminar will offer practical advice about the GNU GPL and other open source licenses. Featured speakers include Heather Meeker, of Greenberg Traurig LLP, and Daniel Egger, founder of OSRM.

Topics include:

• Software fundamentals
• Free and open source software
• Five main types of software liability exposure
• Open source software liability exposure
• Best practices for mitigating open source risk
• How engineers and lawyers can communicate more effectively
• Current topics

OSRM offers a number of insurance products, such as software patent infringment insurance, that it says help protect companies using open source software. However, the seminar will focus solely on licensing issues, with no mention of OSRM products, the company says.

Open-bar is a not-for-profit organization devoted to educating software developers, legal professionals, and the general public about the issues, rights, and responsibilities associated with open source/free software.

The seminar costs $495, including 6.5 MCLE (minimum continuing legal education) credits. It will take place at the Santa Clara Hilton from 8AM to 4:30PM, on Tuesday, May 3. Additional registration details are available online.
