San Francisco, CA; Embedded Systems Conference — (press release excerpt) — Microtronix and Altera Corporation announced the a Linux Development Kit (LDK) for Altera's Nios embedded processor core. The new kit gives designers using the Linux operating system access to Altera's leading programmable logic products, as well as Excalibur embedded processor “system-on-a-programmable-chip” (SOPC) solutions.

Microtronix ported uClinux, a small footprint version of Linux used specifically for processors without MMU capability, to the Nios processor. Using a soft processor core, such as the Nios processor, coupled with the flexibility and user customization capabilities of PLDs make this kit one of the most adaptable in the marketplace.

The LDK includes an SDRAM expansion board, an Ethernet board, and a host board that supports mass storage devices and a real time clock. The hardware expansion boards are designed for easy integration with the board included with the Nios Development Kit. Microtronix will be manufacturing the hardware for the LDK as well as providing top-level technical support. LDK software includes the full source code for uClinux on the Nios embedded processor core, µClibc, standard GNU development tools, the Boa Web Server, and other assorted applications.

The Nios LDK is expected to cost $2495, and will be available starting in July of 2001.
