MontaVista Software Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) will announce on Monday a partnership with Seoul, Korea based Mizi Research Inc. whereby Mizi will market, distribute, and support MontaVista's products in Korea. The arrangement will cover the full range of MontaVista products, including MontaVista Linux Professional Edition, MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition, Visual Age Micro Edition for MontaVista Linux, and MontaVista Graphics. Mizi will also provide first-line technical support for local software developers.

Both Mizi and MontaVista offer their own unique embedded Linux distributions and toolkits. Mizi is apparently taking advantage of MontaVista's breadth of embedded application support to enlarge their opportunity in the Korean market, while MontaVista hopes to gain a strong marketing partner in Korea for its products.

Mizi specializes in mobile and handheld solutions based on embedded Linux. Mizi's [email protected] is an embedded Linux operating system with a GUI based on Qt/Embedded. Supported processors include ARM, StrongARM, MIPS, x86, and PowerPC, and OS is said to required as little as 2MB of DRAM and 4MB of Flash memory. They recently announced the availability of a Linux PDA developer kit, [email protected].

“The telecommunications and consumer electronics industries in Korea are accelerating their migration of software platforms from proprietary OSes to Linux,” said Youngjin Seo, CEO & president of MIZI. “We believe that the MontaVista Linux line of products, which are known for their robustness and scalability, will fulfill an important need for our customers in Korea.”

“Mizi definitely is a technology market leader in Korea,” said Bill Weinberg of MontaVista Director of Strategy. “As MontaVista aims at satisfying the needs of each market, the relationship with Mizi may in future well involve technology sharing and development collaboration as needed for Korean market. Mizi's stack, . . . their main value-add, will be available on top of MontaVista Linux”.

“Mizi is not replacing, but complementing existing MontaVista distributors in Korea,” explained Weinberg. “Mizi is both a distributor and VAR for MontaVista.”

“This partnership not only marks MontaVista's continued expansion, but also further consolidation in the embedded Linux market,” Weinberg added.
