Dec 14, 2004 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Igel Technology is shipping three new high-end thin clients based on embedded Linux. The Premium-series Clever Client models are based on 1GHz Via C3 processors, and include local Mozilla browsers with Flash and Acrobat plug-ins. An Enterprise model includes Java and a local SAP client.

The new clients include both analog VGA and digital DVI connectors, to support legacy CRTs and LCDs as well as digitally controlled TFT (thin-film transistor) local displays. The UMA (unified memory architecture) video subsystem borrows 8MB of system RAM, supporting 1600 x 1200 resolution at 16-bits of color, or 1280 x 1024 at 24-bit color. Max resolution with DVI displays is 1280 x 1024.

Expansion capabilities are offered through a local PCI slot, as well as a local PCMCIA slot. I/O ports include:

  • One 10/100 Ethernet, with WOL (wake-on-LAN)
  • Two DB-9 RS-232C serial ports
  • One DB-25 bi-directional parallel port
  • Four USB 2.0 ports, including two on front panel
  • Two PS-2 ports
  • IDE port
  • AC97 audio with built-in speaker and I/O ports
  • PC/SC-compliant Smart Card reader

The clients support Igel's Remote Management Suite, which offers online configuration based on a central SQL database. They are available in futuristic black, PC-gray, or silver-gray metallic cases measuring 11.4 x 9.1 x 2.1 inches (290 x 230 x 53mm).

Models include:

  • IGEL-564 Premium

The IGEL-564 is intended for use as an X-terminal in pure Linux/Unix environments. It includes a local X-server, along with a variety of local X-fonts, and it supports the X11/XDMCP protocols. A more complete ICA/RDP firmware version is also available, and includes a local Mozilla browser with Flash and Acrobat plugins. It comes stock with 128MB of RAM, expandable to 1GB.

  • IGEL-5128 Premium

The IGEL-5128 supports X11/XDMCP, and also includes a Citrix ICA 8.2 and RDP Linux client, for use with Windows Terminal Server and Citrix MetaFrame environments. It includes a PowerTerm emulation suite with integrated Kerberos authentication, for single sign-on access to hosted applications. It includes 256MB of RAM, expandable to 1GB.

  • IGEL-5128 Enterprise

The IGEL-5128 Enterprise model adds a local Java Runtime environment, along with a SAP GUI for Java that allows direct access to SAP servers, Igel says. It also includes a local Mozilla browser with Flash, RealPlayer, and MPlayer plugins. It comes stock with 256MB of RAM, expandable to 1GB.
