Fanless embedded PC likes to play rough
Jun 9, 2010 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 4 viewsAvalue is readying a rugged, fanless, embedded computer for vehicles, industrial machines, and military equipment, equipped with a dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor. The ERS-PNV series offers dual gigabit Ethernet ports, five USB 2.0 ports, three serial ports, plus both CompactFlash and SATA storage, says the company.
The ERS-PNV comes standard with the dual-core Intel Atom D510, but can also be deployed with one of the other two single-core D410 or N450 "Pineview" Atoms, says Avalue. Supporting up to 2GB of DDR2 667MHz SDRAM, the computer provides both a CompactFlash (CF) slot and dual SATA ports, with a mounting kit for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD), says the company.

Three serial ports are said to be provided, with an option for three more front-facing serial ports available via an LPC to COM module. A VGA port and audio I/O round out the set of available interfaces.

Anti-vibration has been tested at up to 5 Grms, and anti-shock up to 50 Grms, claims Avalue. Other ruggedization features are said to include a secure metal covering for the CF slot, and an optional lockable or industry-grade Phoenix-type power connector plug that supports a stable +9V to +32V wide voltage input.
A service window on the bottom cover of the system provides access to the internal system board and hard drive, says the company.
