Fanless PC taps new Atom N455-based Mini-ITX board

Jul 28, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Ibase announced a fanless industrial PC with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 processor. Based on a recently announced MI890 Mini-ITX board, the CMI300-890 computer supports up to 2GB DDR3 RAM, offers a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) bay, and sports I/O including includes six USB ports, says the company.

The CMI300-890 is built around a Ibase MI890 Mini-ITX motherboard, which incorporates the 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455. The MI890 updates last summer's MI889 board, which supported either the single-core, 1.6GHz Atom N450 or the dual-core D510.

The MI890 can instead fit the single-core N455, the single-core D425, or the dual-core D525, moving up to DDR3 memory accordingly. Like the MI889, it has two gigabit Ethernet ports, four serial ports, eight USB 2.0 ports, PCI Express (PCIe) connectivity, and dual SATA ports. However, it appears to lose the earlier IDE connection, among other minor differences. (For more information, see the link to the MI890 product page at the end of this story.)

The relatively simple CMI300-890 does not make full use of the MI890's extensive I/O. For example, it omits its PCI, PCIe, and mini-PCIe expansion.

And, while the motherboard accepts up to 4GB of RAM when fitted with the Atom D525, the Atom N455 that comes standard with the built-up PC can only address 2GB, rendering one of the SODIMM slots useless. A single 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive (HDD) bay is available, supporting capacities up to 160GB, says Ibase.

The CMI300-890 offers dual gigabit Ethernet ports and six USB 2.0 ports, two of them facing front, says Ibase. Also provided are four COM ports, which based on the MI890's feature set, would appear to include one RS-232/422/485 port. The system is further equipped with a VGA port and audio I/O, says the company.

A 60 Watt power adaptor is supplied along with brackets for wall-mounting, says Ibase. The front of the steel case is said to be equipped with an HDD status LED bar, and a power button with LED indicator.

The fanless, 7.87 x 7.87 x 2.44-inch box can withstand temperatures of 32 to 113 deg. F (0 to 45 deg. C), says Ibase. The CMI300-890 is also said to offer vibration resistance.

Features and specifications listed for the CMI300-890 include:

  • Processor — Intel Atom N455 @ 1.66GHz; via MI890 motherboard
  • Memory — up to 2GB DDR3 RAM via single SODIMM
  • Networking — 2 x gigabit Ethernet ports
  • Other I/O:
    • 6 x USB 2.0 ports (2 x front-facing)
    • 4 x COM ports
    • VGA port
    • Audio I/O
  • Power — 60W power adaptor
  • Operating temperature — 32 to 113 deg. F (0 to 45 deg. C)
  • Vibration resistance — 0.25 grms / 5~500Hz / random
  • Dimensions — 7.87 x 7.87 x 2.44 inches (200 x 200 x 62mm); desktop or wallmount

Availability

According to Ibase, the CMI300-890 has been "released," and the MI890 Mini-ITX board inside also appears to be available separately. No operating system or pricing information was available. More information may be found at the Ibase CMI300-890 page, and MI890 page, respectively.
