Little signage PC sprouts wings, jettisons fan

Oct 4, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Ibase announced a fanless digital signage PC with a dual-core AMD G-Series processor and a DVI-I output. Providing hardware video acceleration, the SI-08 has a 1.6GHz T56N processor, up to 2GB of RAM and 1TB of disk storage, gigabit Ethernet and a serial port, and a Mini PCI slot for optional Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the company says.

Back in March, Ibase announced the SI-18 (pictured), a 4.9 x 4.9 x 1.4-inch signage PC incorporating AMD's dual-core, 1.6GHz T56N (including a graphics processing unit with DirectX 11 and HD video compatibility). We wondered out loud at the time if the device were fanless, since the company didn't say, and cooling holes appeared on both sides of the device.

With its new SI-08, Ibase has answered that question — in a way that's functional, but also strikes us as a little comical-looking. The device appears to be identical to the previous SI-18, except that its case has sprouted a heat sink on top and cooling "wings" on the sides.

Now, Ibase confirms, there's no fan. Rated operating range is from 32 to 104 deg. F, however, so those in very hot climates might want to stick with the SI-18, whose range extended from 32 to 133 deg. F.

An integral wall mounting bracket is apparently affixed to the bottom of the case, and keeps the SI-08 from looking quite so top-heavy. You might need small hands, however, to tighten any screws you mount it with.

The T56N, featuring dual cores and a 1.6GHz clock speed, uses 18 Watts, according to AMD. The SI-08 teams this processor with from 2GB to 4GB of DDR3 memory, and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive that's offered in capacities from 160GB to 1TB, says Ibase.

According to Ibase, the SI-08 has a DVI-I port that, with appropriate adapters, can support DVI, VGA, or HDMI displays (maximum resolution up to 2560 x 1600 pixels). It also includes two USB 2.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, and a serial port that itself employs an RJ45 connector, the company adds.

Internal expansion is said to be present in the form of a Mini PCI Express slot. This is intended primarily for an optional Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapter, Ibase says.

Specifications provided by Ibase for the SI-08 include:

  • Processor — AMD G-Series T56N (dual core; 1.6GHz clock speed)
