Mini PC has dual-core Atom, Ion 2

Habey USA announced an “Apple TV-style” PC that includes a dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor and an Nvidia Ion 2 GPU (graphics processing unit). The “EPC-6568” is offered today for approximately $260, but will be the subject of a Newegg.com “Black Friday” deal later this week, the company adds.

Habey's EPC-6568, touted as a digital signage media player but also applicable to home theater applications, is built around a previously released mini-ITX board, the MITX-6564. In our October coverage of that product, we noted that Habey was already offering three embedded computers based on it, but the new EPC-6568, measuring just 8.85 x 7.87 x 2.16 inches, appears to be the smallest variant yet.

Said to have an "Apple TV-style" case, the EPC-6568 (above) does not include space for an optical disk drive, though we're told that a further variant, the EPC-6569, will have a "Mac mini-style" case that does. Meanwhile, the EPC-6568 has room for two 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives, according to Habey.

Supplied in a barebones configuration, the EPC-6568 accepts up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM via two SODIMM slots, according to Habey. The device also has two Mini PCI Express slots, one of which must be used to add wireless networking capabilities if desired, according to the company.

Ports on Habey's EPC-6568

The EPC-6568's interfaces, pictured above, all derive directly from the coastline of the MITX-6564, as a comparison with the image below makes clear. From left to right, they include an HDMI port, a VGA port, an S/PDIF optical digital output, two USB 2.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, a headphone output, and a microphone input.

Naturally, the EPC-6568's CPU and GPU are the same as the MITX-6564's too. The device uses Intel's dual-core, 1.66GHz Atom D510 and Nvidia's second-generation Ion, informally referred to as the Ion 2.

On the EPC-6568/MITX-6564, the Ion 2 takes the form of a fan-cooled Nvidia GeForce GT218 module that has 512MB of dedicated video memory. The system provides dual-monitor support, hardware accelerated decoding of HD video, and resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels, according to Habey.

We did not see power consumption claims for the EPC-6568, but the MITX-6564 was previously said to use 21 Watts. Operating system support for the PC includes Linux, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Embedded Standard, and Windows Vista, Habey says.

Features and specifications listed by Habey for the EPC-6568 include:

  • Processor — Intel Atom D510 clocked at 1.66GHz
  • Chipset — Intel NM10 and Nvidia GeForce GT218
  • Memory — Up to 4GB DDR2 via 2 x SODIMM slots

  • Further information

Habey does not appear to have its own product page for the EPC-6568, but further information may be found on Newegg.com, here, and Directron.com, here. The device's regular price is said to be $260, but special pricing will be offered this Friday by Newegg.com, according to Habey.
