Compact signage PC packs Nvidia GPU

Apr 1, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 4 views

Nexcom announced a compact, fanless PC aimed at digital signage applications. The NDIS 125-L uses a dual-core Intel Atom D525 processor, includes 1GB of DDR3 RAM and a 160GB hard disk drive, offers both VGA and HDMI video outputs, and has an internal USB connector for an optional 802.11b/g/n wireless module, the company says.

Recent signage PCs such as Ibase's SI-18 have been turning to AMD's G-Series processors because of their integral support for HD video. Nexcom's NDIS 125-L sticks with Intel's dual-core Atom D525 processor (and NM10 I/O controller), gaining its own HD chops from Nvidia's Ion 2 GPU (graphics processing unit).

While AMD's on-chip CPU/GPU combo has been touted as a more cost-effective choice, we don't know the effect on pricing here because neither Ibase nor Nexcom has cited the cost of its PCs. However, the NDIS 125-L offers essentially the same functionality as the SI-18, including the dual-core CPU and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (160GB in this case).

According to Nexcom, the NDIS 125-L has 1GB of DDR3 RAM (expandability not cited), four USB 2.0 ports (two front, two rear), plus both VGA and HDMI video outputs. The device appears to have two audio connectors (functionality unstated), but lacks a serial port.

Nexcom cites an operating range of 32 to 104 deg. F but does not mention power consumption. Operating system support wasn't cited, but should include all client editions of Windows as well as Linux.

Specifications provided by Nexcom for the NDIS 125-L include:

  • Processor — Intel Atom D525 (dual core; 1.6GHz clock speed)
  • Chipset — Intel NM10 Express
