HD-ready panel PC targets home theater market
Jul 25, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsHabey announced a 12-inch panel PC with a 1.8GHz, dual-core Intel Atom D525 processor and Nvidia Ion GT218 graphics card. Ready for home theater applications, the PPC-6512 offers HDMI/VGA dual display capability, plus mini-PCIe, SATA, USB, serial, and Ethernet connections, according to the company.
While most panel PCs are aimed at digital signage, kiosks, and industrial applications, Habey has created one with sufficient graphical chops to reach into the home theater market as well. The PPC-6512 can drive a large TV or projector via its HDMI output, and is also suitable for home automation control, the company says.

The PPC-6512 appears to be a larger, panel-eqipped variation on the EPC-6568 announced last November, which was in turn based on a previously released mini-ITX board, the MITX-6564. In May, this "Apple TV-style" PC was revised in an EPC-6563 model (pictured), which dropped EPC-6568's Ion graphics, but moved from an Atom D510 up to the 1.8GHz D525. The new PPC-6512 offers both the Ion and the D525.
No resolution is listed for the 12-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio touchscreen, but resolution pushed out via the supplied VGA and HDMI ports is said to be 2048 x 1536 and 2560 x 1600 pixels, respectively. Dual display capability is supported, and an S/PDIF port can send digital audio to a home entertainment system, says Habey.

A PPC-6512 C model offers a 1.3-megapixel camera located on top of the touchscreen. While this model is built with plastic and steel, the cam-less PPC-6512 A model uses oxidized aluminum instead of plastic.

Habey claims the computer consumes less than 30 Watts, and shows a photograph of a Kill-a-Watt meter reading of 28 Watts. The PPC-6512 supports Linux, Windows Embedded XP/7, or Windows XP/Vista/7 Pro or Home operating systems, and can be further customized for OEM orders, says the company.
