Eurotech announced a GPS-enabled rugged display computer for in-vehicle installations, featuring EN50155 compliance for railways. The DynaVIS 10-00 is equipped with a 1.1GHz Intel Atom, soldered 512MB RAM and 2GB flash, a 4GB microSDHC card, a 5.7-inch touchscreen, optional Wi-Fi and cellular modems, a wide-range power supply, plus a variety of wired I/O expressed via dual opto-isolated ports.

The DynaVIS 10-00 is designed for in-vehicle applications that must withstand high mechanical and temperature stresses while also providing extensive connectivity, says Eurotech. Railways would seem to be a prime customer, considering the computer's EN50155 railway-standard compliance.

The computer runs on a 1.1GHz Intel Atom, although it's unclear whether it's the original Atom Z510 or the automotive-focused, temperature resistant Z510P/PT. Whereas the latter processors support an industrial temperature range of -40 to 150 deg. F, the DynaVIS 10-00 itself tops out at -13 to 131 deg. F.

Additional ruggedization features include compliance with the EN standards for vibration, shock, safety, burst immunity, and temperature, says Eurotech (see spec list below). IP65 ingress protection is also offered.

The computer incorporates a 5.7-inch, 640 x 480 resistive touchscreen with backlighting features, and a VGA port is also said to be available. GPS is standard, and Wi-Fi and 3G cellular modems are optional, says Eurotech. Antenna connectors are provided for all three wireless technologies.

Most of the wired I/O is expressed via dual opto-isolated interfaces: M2 and M3. These include dual gigabit Ethernet ports, dual USB 2.0 ports, and audio ports, says Eurotech.

The interfaces are also said to include five digital outputs, 10 digital inputs, and dual serial ports. A standard maintenance serial port is also available.

An M1 interface, meanwhile, offers 24VDC power in. The computer supports a wide range power supplies from 10.5 to 36 VDC, with support for additional power supplies said to be optional. The 9.06 x 5.51 x 2.43-inch, 3.3-pound DynaVIS 10-00 consumes a modest 19 Watts, claims the company.

The DynaVIS 10-00 supports Wind River Linux 3.0, says Eurotech. Like the company's circa-2009 Helios edge controller, it also supports Eurotech's Everyware Software Framework (ESF) application development platform, as well as the Everyware Device Cloud (EDC), designed to "easily integrate embedded devices into IT business applications."

Tough going in the cloud

Amaro, Italy-based Eurotech had high hopes for EDC, which it formally launched in 2010, but customers have been hesitant to buy in to the ambitious embedded cloud strategy in this uncertain economy, according to an Oct. 4 report on Eurotech in BusinessWeek. The company, whose embedded computers are used by Boeing Co. and Chevron Corp., among many other customers, may post a fifth consecutive annual loss this quarter, says the story.

Despite recent setbacks, Eurotech Chief Financial Officer Sandro Barazza told the publication that his company will continue to push EDC, which is said to enable accessing and sharing applications, data, and hardware services on any device. However, Eurotech may instead focus more on Asian markets such as Korea and China than on its troubled European industrial base, Barazza was quoted as saying.
