Vehicle-mount PC resists harsh conditions

Jun 23, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 4 views

Advantech-DLoG announced a 15-inch touchscreen PC that resists harsh environments and may be mounted on forklifts or in truck cabs. The IPC 7/215 is IP67-rated, comes with or without 21 programmable keys, has two PCI expansion slots, and is offered with either Celeron or Core Duo processors, according to the company.

Advantech acquired DLoG GmbH, a manufacturer of both stationary industrial PCs and vehicle-mount terminals, in March 2010. Though Advantech sells Trek-branded vehicle computers, products continue to be offered under the Advantech-DLoG brand as well.

The latest example is the new IPC 7/215, an all-in-one device, which has a 15-inch screen. The device is offered with Intel Celeron processors in either 800MHz or 1GHz versions, or with a Core Duo L2400 clocked at 1.66GHz, and runs fanlessly in all cases, according to Advantech-DLoG.

The IPC 7/215 is offered either with the 21 programmable keys, visible at the bottom and right on the image above, or just with power and brightness controls. In both cases, it includes a 15-inch screen that has a 450-nit brightness rating and a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, the company says.

Also included on both IPC 7/215 versions is "DLogG-specific" resistive touchscreen technology. This is said to employ film-film-glass (FFG) with buffer-layer technology, incorporating two polyester films that have been chemically hardened.

According to Advantech-DLoG, the IPC 7/215 comes in an aluminum housing that meets stringent IP67 standards for resistance to liquids and airborne contaminants. The 15.6 x 12.8 x 4.8-inch case holds a 40 or 60GB hard disk drive and also provides room for two PCI slots (compatible with short cards up to 5.5 inches), the company says.

Adding that a Type I/II CardBus slot and a Mini PCI slot may also be ordered (presumably displacing the PCI slots), Advantech-DLoG says the IPC 7/215 has 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking. Wired interfaces consist of 10/100 Ethernet, a PS/2 port, two USB 2.0 ports, and two RS232 ports (or one RS232 and one RS422/485).

Specifications listed by Advantech-DLoG for the IPC 7/215 include:
