Rugged in-vehicle panel PC bristles with wireless options

Nov 2, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 24 views

IEI announced a ruggedized, fanless panel PC with extensive wireless options. The vehicle-oriented UPC-V312-D525 offers an Intel Atom D525 processor, a 12.1-inch 1024 x 768 display, CompactFlash, a 1.3 megapixel camera, plus redundant DC power supplies, according to the company.

The UPC-V312-D525 is designed for rugged in-vehicle environments, such as forklift duty, says IEI. Its extruded aluminum chassis measures 13.32 x 10.87 x 2.47 inches, and is designed with IP65 ingress protection, extended temperature support, and shock and vibration resistance. Along with the system's optional solid state drive (SSD), these features allow the device to survive continuous shocks and jolts, says the company.

Like the 15-inch PPC-5152-D525 panel PC recently announced by IEI, the UPC-V312-D525 is equipped with dual-core, 1.8GHz Intel Atom D525 processor. There are some other similarities to that less ruggedized model, but just as many differences. For example, the new UPC-V312-D525 offers only 1GB of DDR3 memory, with no chance for expansion, while the PPC-5152-D525 supplies up to 4GB.

The UPC-V312-D525 is equipped with a 12.1-inch, 1024 x 768 pixel resistive touchscreen with LED backlighting, wide viewing angles, and a 600-nit brightness rating, says IEI. Below the screen is a row of function keys, with blue indicators to show status.

A CompactFlash socket is available, as well as the optional SSD, which hooks into one of the three mini-PCI Express (PCIe) interfaces. One of those expansion interfaces is dedicated to Wi-Fi, and another can be filled with an optional audio/video capture card. A 1.3-megapixel camera is said to be standard.

Other expansion options are available via one of four available USB ports, including 3.5G HSUPA cellular and GPS, says IEI. Additional options include MiFare or EM RFID card readers and a Bluetooth 2.1 module. Antennas are said to be available for all these wireless options (see image above).

In addition to the USB ports, standard I/O includes a gigabit Ethernet port, a VGA port, audio I/O, and both an RS-232 and RS-422/485 port, says IEI. A power-isolated CAN bus connector is said to support connections to sensors or plant actuators. The CAN interface features bus arbitration and error detection with an automatic transmission repeat function, says the company.

Unlike the PPC-5152-D525, the UPC-V312-D525 offers a variety of power features designed for the rigorous forklift environment. A redundant dual DC input (9V ~ 36V) power supply increases reliability while preventing data loss and system corruption from sudden power failure, says IEI (see image below). When main power is unavailable or low voltage capacity is present, the system can switch to the second power input without interruption, says the company.

Operating system support was not listed, but the computer presumably supports Linux and a variety of Windows flavors. The UPC-V312-D525 includes IEI's One Key Recovery software which allows the user to create a full system backup (or restore to a previously made backup image) with a single click, says the company.
