Rugged PC/104 CPU modules support Linux

Jul 11, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Parvus is shipping a trio of powerful fanless PC/104-Plus CPU modules aimed at high-vibration, extreme temperature sealed embedded-PC applications, such as mobile computing. The SpacePC CPU-146x boards feature an 800MHz ULV Pentium III processor, along with heat-spreader plates for attachment to heat-sinks or cases.

The CPU-146x series cards closely resemble cards in the company's 145X series, but with 800MHz ULV (ultra-low voltage) Celeron CPUs instead of a 400MHz Celeron CPUs. The new cards incorporate a flat, aluminum heat spreader plate intended to be mounted in direct contact with a conductive gap pad and the wall of the enclosure, a traditional heatsink, or other thermal management device. Parvus says that extensive thermal analysis showed that components will not become heat-stressed, when the company's mounting instructions are followed.

The company says the 146x boards are suitable for applications requiring numerical calculation, data compression, or high data throughput rates to onboard high-speed peripheral interfaces. Suitable mobile applications include sealed PCs in trains, buses, tanks, and other vehicles.

Along with 800MHz ULV Pentium III (Tualatin) processors, the SpacePC 146X CPU cards feature an Intel 815E chipset. All SpacePC CPUs include:

  • ISA and PCI buses
  • 256MB soldered-on RAM for better heat efficiency and vibration tolerance
  • DiskOnModule, CompactFlash, or ATA Flash support
  • 10/100MBps Ethernet network controller
  • 1xRS232, 1xRS232/422/485
  • 4×1.1 USB ports (except CPU-1461)
  • AC97 audio
  • VGA video port
  • 13 Watts of 5-Volt DC power (CPU-1463 draws 15 Watts)
  • Operating temp of 0 to 50 degrees C, or -40 to 85 degrees C (extended temp models)
  • Supports Linux, Windows CE and XP Embedded, QNX Neutrino, and VxWorks

Specific model variations include:

  • SpacePC CPU-1460 — standard embedded PC peripheral devices, as listed above
  • SpacePC CPU-1461 — adds six USB 2.0 and subtracts two 1.1 ports
  • SpacePC CPU-1463 — adds a gigabyte Ethernet controller

Availability

CPU-146X models are in stock, priced from $1,023 to $1,253/each in quantities of 100 or more. Accessories, cable sets, power supplies, enclosures and development kits are also available.
