Broadax Systems Inc. (BSI) announced a fanless embedded computer that's sealed against dust and can withstand immersion in water. The EMS-3701 offers a 1.1GHz Intel Atom Z510PT CPU, 1GB of RAM, CompactFlash storage, a variety of sealed ports that include analog video input, and optional 802.11b/g/n wireless networking, the company says.

According to BSI, its EMS-3701 is "ideal for heavy-duty industry and (as) a low-power-consumption embedded controller." Unlike many other devices of its type, the aluminum-cased PC includes two analog video inputs with BNC connectors, though no information was provided about potential resolutions or frame rates.

The EMS-3701 is compact (9.06 x 3.9 x 2.43 inches) and unusual-looking (right), because it uses M12 connectors instead of standard PC-style interfaces. As a result, the device carries an IP67 rating, meaning that it's sealed against dust and liquids and can be dunked in up to one meter of water without harm.

BSI says the EMS-3701 uses Intel's wide-temperature-range Atom Z510PT, clocked at 1.1GHz, along with the companion SCH US15W northbridge/southbridge. Thanks in part to the CPU's integrated heat spreader, fanless operating range extends from 22 to 158 deg. F (-30 to 70 deg. C), the company says.

According to BSI, the EMS-3701 has a gigabit Ethernet port. The device is optionally available with 802.11b/g/n wireless networking, in which case operating range is said to be reduced to 22 to 122 deg. F (-30 to 50 deg. C).

Other ports, all pictured below, include four USB 2.0 ports, two serial ports (one RS422/485, one RS232), the video capture connectors we've already mentioned, plus a VGA output. A five-pin power connector accepts DC from nine to 28 Volts, BSI says.

The EMS-3701 is said to include 1GB of onboard DDR2 memory, apparently non-expandable. As for mass storage, this is provided by a CompactFlash slot, and the device ships with a preinstalled 4GB card, according to the company.

BSI cites its official support for the use of Windows XP Embedded on the EMS-3701. Of course, the Intel chipsets being employed mean that the device should support Linux and other x86 operating systems, too.
