ICI Controls has announced a “completely sealed” PC intended for embedded and industrial applications in wet and dirty environments. The SC240M is capable of fanless operation, and available with Linux pre-installed on flash storage, according to the company.

Housed in a black aluminum case measuring 10.5 x 7.5 x 3.75 inches, the SC240 comes with a choice of processors that include a 1.2GHz VIA C7, a 1.6GHz Intel Pentium M, and a 1.6 or 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Whichever CPU is chosen, no chassis or CPU fans are required, ICI claims.

In addition to a heat sink, the case includes a flexible, sealable door that protects I/O cables and ports, according to the company. Mounting options include top or bottom adjustable brackets.

ICI says the SC240M accepts 12 or 24VDC power input from its standard AC adapter. Optionally available is an integrated 6-24 VDC vehicle power supply, said to protect a host vehicle from deep battery discharge, while protecting the PC from power fluctuations during engine cranking.

In terms of I/O, the SC240 provides the functionality that would be expected of a standard desktop PC, including serial, USB, keyboard/mouse, LAN, and video output. Optional upgrades include additional serial ports, S-Video TV output, 1394 Firewire, and an integrated DC terminal block.

Features and specifications listed by ICI for the SC240M include:

  • Processor — 1.2GHz Via C7, 1.6GHz Pentium M, 1.6GHz or 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo

  • Memory — 512MB standard, upgradable to 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB depending on processor chosen
  • Storage — 40GB “extended temperature” hard drive, or flash storage in 2GB-32GB configurations
  • Display — 2D/3D video with MPEG-2 decoder and MPEG-4 accelerator
  • Networking:
    • 10/100 LAN with RJ-45 port
    • 10/100/1000 LAN (optional)
    • 802.11b/g wireless LAN (optional)
  • Other I/O:
    • HD15 video port
    • PS/2 keyboard/mouse ports
    • 4 x USB 2.0
    • 1 x RS-232 with DB-9 connector (2 or 4 RS-422/485 ports, optional)
    • S-Video TV output (optional)
    • IEEE-1394 Firewire
  • Power requirements — 12 or 24 VDC via external AC adapter, 6-24 VDC input via optional vehicle power supply
  • Environmental:
    • Operating temperature — -20 to 45 deg. C
    • Storage temperature — -20 to 70 deg. C
  • Dimensions — 10.5 x 7.5 x 3.75 inches

Available now, the SC240M costs approximately $1,700 in a configuration including the Via C7 processor, 512MB of RAM, and Linux installed on a 40 GB hard drive, and $2,200 in a similar configuration with the Core 2 Duo processor.

The SC240M is also available with Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded, or Windows Vista installed. More information is available on the company's Web site, here.
