Fanless box targets industrial apps

Oct 24, 2008 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Aewin announced an “embedded box computer” targeting kiosk, vehicle, and industrial applications. The SEM-7705 supports fanless operation with Intel Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, or Celeron processors, has four serial ports and dual gigabit Ethernet ports, and can employ CompactFlash or hard disk storage,… says Aewin.

According to Aewin, its new SEM-7705 has a “robust, compact, sealed” housing, with integral heat sink. The device is said to run fanlessly with any of the supported CPUs — namely, Intel Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, and Celeron M processors that have 533MHz or 667MHz frontside buses and are compatible with the computer's onboard Socket 479.

The SEM-7705 uses Intel's 945GME northbridge and ICH7 southbridge, says Aewin. The device accepts up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, via a single SODIMM socket, plus mass storage that can be provided by either a 2.5-inch HDD (hard disk drive) or a Type II CompactFlash card, the company adds.

Standard interfaces on the box are mostly visible in the above photo. From left to right, they include a 12VDC power input, VGA port, PS/2 port for keyboard and mouse, four USB ports (two are not pictured above because they're on the front), dual gigabit Ethernet ports, and four serial ports.

In case that's not enough, Aewin also touts an optional MIO (multiple I/O) module, which apparently installs into the SEM-7705 internally. The MIO module is said to add a microphone input and speaker output, plus S-Video, DVI, and LVDS video outputs. However, Aewin doesn't indicate whether the additional I/O exits the device via added real-world connectors, or is simply served up via pin headers.

Other internal expansion cited by Aewin includes a PCI slot of unstated dimensions, which apparently requires an optional, angled “riser card” to become usable. As mentioned earlier, the box has room for both a 2.5-inch HDD and a Type II CompactFlash disk.

If CompactFlash storage is chosen, Aewin adds, the computer is resistant to sine wave vibration of up to 3Grms at frequencies of 10Hz to 15Hz. Cited operating range for any configuration is from 0 to 40 deg. C (32 to 104 deg. F).

Features and specifications listed by Aewin for the SEM-7705 include:

  • Processor — Intel Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, or Celeron M, with 553MHz or 667MHz frontside buses (possible clock speeds not stated)
  • Memory — Up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM via single SODIMM slot
  • Storage — 2.5-inch HDD or Type II CompactFlash slot
  • Display — Supports VGA output, plus optional DVI, LVDS, or S-Video
  • Networking — 2 x gigabit Ethernet ports
  • Other I/O:
    • 4 x USB 2.0 (two front panel, two rear)
    • 4 x RS232
    • 1 x PS/2 connector for keyboard and mouse
    • 1 x VGA
    • 12VDC input
    • 1 x mic in (via MIO option)
    • 1 x line out (via MIO)
    • 1 x LVDS (via MIO)
    • 1 x S-Video (via MIO)
    • 1 x DVI (via MIO)

  • Expansion:
    • Type II CompactFlash slot
    • PCI slot

  • Operating temperature — 0 to 40 deg. C (32 to 104 deg. F)
  • Dimensions — 8.7 x 8.5 x 3.5 inches (220 x 217 x 88mm)

With its standard Intel chipsets, the SEM-7705 is likely to be compatible with Linux. However, stated operating system support is limited to Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.

Availability

According to Aewin, the SEM-7705 is shipping now for an undisclosed price. More information may be available on the company's website, here.
