Lanner Electronics announced an Intel Core i3/i5/i7-based PC that's ready to provide 3G, Wi-Fi, and GPS connectivity, thanks to a Mini PCI Express slot and SIM card reader. The LEC-7920 supports up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, includes a 2.5-inch SATA bay, and offers gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, and serial I/O, plus both DVI-I and DVI-D video ports.

Designed for digital signage or automation applications in both industrial and commercial settings, the LEC-7920 is a stripped-down version of Lanner's existing LEC-2220. The latter was billed as the fastest LEC-branded industrial computer to date when it was announced in November.

The LEC-7920 offers fewer serial ports than the the LEC-2220, lacks the additional PCI Express (PCIe) expansion options, and has been redesigned with a slightly smaller chassis. In addition, the computer has a narrower temperature range and lacks the LEC-2220's wide power input. 

The LEC-7920 (pictured) should be every bit as fast as the original, however, as it supports the same range of circa-2010 Intel Core i3/ i5/i7 "Arrandale" processors, up to a dual-core Core i7-620M clocked to 2.66GHz. The system can also accept a Celeron processor.

Like the LEC-2220, the LEC-7920 can be equipped with up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, and includes a 2.5-inch bay for SATA storage. A Mini PCI Express card is available along with a SIM card reader for 3G, Wi-Fi, and GPS add-on modules.

Dual gigabit Ethernet ports are available along with four USB 2.0 ports — only two of which are external — and two serial ports, says Lanner. As before, the system offers both a DVI-I port, compatible with both analog and digital DVI signals, and a digital-only DVI-D port, says the company. Audio I/O and DIO are also said to be available.

The fanless LEC-7920 supports a temperature range of 32 to 113 deg. F when fitted with industrial components, says Lanner. The computer offers a "dust proof design," says Lanner, although no standards compliance was claimed along those lines.

The computer is further promoted for its top and bottom covering, which opens on a hinge, allowing for quick access to the motherboard, says the company. The computer is said to be compatible with Linux, Windows XP, and Windows 7.
