Michel Gien, founder of embedded virtualization specialist VirtualLogix, will give an hour-long presentation on the application of virtualization technology to Linux-based mobile phones and real-time applications, at LinuxWorld in San Francisco next week. The company will also demonstrate the technology on mobile handsets and digital multimedia, it says.

According to VirtualLogix, “In the iPhone era, the mobile handset industry is eager to leverage the power of open platforms and the rapidly growing Linux mobile ecosystem to deliver lower cost, feature-rich mobile handsets and innovative new services. However, there are several challenges that must be overcome for Linux to realize its full impact in mass market handsets.”

In his presentation, entitled “A Case Study in Mobile/Real-Time Virtualization — Rich Functionality of Linux in Low Cost High Volume Feature Phones,” Gien plans to discuss how real-time virtualization addresses these challenges and enables manufacturers to drive innovation and deliver the rich functionalities of Linux on lower cost, high-volume feature phones.

Attendees of Gien's talk “will learn how a leading handset manufacturer was able to speed the inclusion of open operating systems into low-cost, high-volume feature phones by running an open OS together with a mobile phone stack simultaneously, on shared hardware,” says VirtualLogix. The presentation reportedly will also explain “how a fault tolerant architecture can enable the full operation of core phone services even when the open operating system has been corrupted by mobile malware.”

Additionally, VirtualLogix says it will demonstrate VLX-MX, a free “eXperimentation” edition of its “VLX for Mobile Handsets” (VLX-MH) embedded virtualization platform, at its booth in the LinuxWorld expo area. The company claims that VLX-MH provides enhanced security features that can protect phone services from potential corruptions due to the presence on the device of an open OS such as Linux, and that it enables handset manufacturers and wireless operators to deliver more reliable, lower-cost handsets with a fault-tolerant architecture to the mass market.

Another version of VLX, “VLX for Digital Multimedia” (VLX-DM), is said to enable Linux 2.6 and TI's DSP/BIOS real-time kernel to run concurrently on TI's DaVinci processors, “enabling developers to take advantage of the “rich functionality” of Linux along with the real-time capabilities of the TI DSP/BIOS kernel on a single core.”

Gien's hour-long presentation is scheduled for Thursday, August 9 at 10:15 AM, at VirtualLogix's Booth (#943) at Moscone Center.

VirtualLogix recently announced that it had received new series B funding of $16 million.
